So right now I'm in a café down the street from my apartment, and they have air conditioning, and coffee, and internet. This café has become everyone's favorite hangout spot, including mine. This place is almost better than Starbucks.
I was lucky enough to spend Rosh Hashana with my best friend and her family in Jerusalem, which was a welcome break from the heat of Tel Aviv and the stress of my program. Israelis say that you can either be a Jerusalem person or a Tel Aviv person, but you can't be both. I always denied this and claimed you could be both, until I moved to Tel Aviv, and discovered that I am very much a Jerusalem person. I guess it's a good thing I'm living in Tel Aviv first.
Anyway, Rosh Hashana was full of laughs and songs and good food, and although I desperately missed services at TBA, I really did have a nice time.
Yesterday I arrived back in Tel Aviv and settled back into my apartment, which I've spent very little time in since I moved in. It's been so hot that I've been sleeping at one of the other apartments (which has air conditioning), BUT... we can now turn on one air conditioner at a time in our apartment, and so it's cooled off quite a bit. The newest problem is that the air conditioning pours water from a tube in the wall. I actually managed to fix it (sort of) using my bright green duct tape (to everyone who laughed at me for packing duct tape... I WIN), and now it's not pouring water all over the place, just dripping a bit. I'm quite the handy man. :)
I'm rapidly discovering that living on my own means that I don't have my dad to fix all these problems for me; I just have to figure it out. It's a combination of terrifying and exhilarating and just hilarious.
My volunteer position begins at 9:00 tomorrow morning, and classes start on Monday afternoon. I'm really, really excited to get into a normal routine. All the running around and the sleeping here and there and everywhere has been fun and exciting, but I can't wait for real life to start.
In other news, happy (slightly belated) 25th anniversary to my parents! I wish you a wonderful weekend away, and I would like to remind my mother not to do anything stupid like run 10 miles on her injured foot.
I'll update more once everything gets going, but until then, I wish you all a sweet new year!
